If Life Was Predictable, It Would Be Boring

Taking the risk.

Life = Risk.

That’s OK. It’s a good thing.

You gotta take that risk believing you will succeed, even though you know the truth that you might not. If success was guaranteed, where’s the fun in that?

I recently wrote about how failure is better than inaction, and I also mentioned how defeat can be a set-up for more important victories in the future. I don’t want to beat this theme to death, but I recently came across a video that was related to this topic that really moved me.

Here is the video I’m talking about. Hope you enjoy it like I did.

I love that video! A lot of people think that it’s only interesting to hear about successes. I like hearing about failures that led to successes!

@ Mary - “Keep on keeping on.” Very catchy!

@ Hunter - Glad you liked it :) . Indeed, a success story is incomplete without sharing any of failures that led to it.

That vid is a great find Al. Michael Jordan being cut from his bball team was legendary stuff when I was growing up (I played a lot of bball). Some of those other failures are news to me, though. Just goes to show what the vid said: life = risk.

Hi Peter - agreed about Jordan’s story being well known. I can hear it 1,000 times and still get inspired.

I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback, and congrats on being a dad again :) .

    Hi Al,

Your title says it all, and the video is like the icing on the cake.

Life is about taking risks, and if we don’t take risks, we’ll never accomplish anything. Thanks for the great reminder.

Thanks Barbara. The title is something I sometimes need to tell myself as a reminder!

Peter, I don’t know how you do it. Working, blogging, and now a dad again. The hardest working man in the blogosphere!

18 years from now, your little one can do a Google search (or whatever new search engine they use in the future) to look up baby pictures on your blog. Isn’t technology awesome? :)

Hi Robin - glad you and your partner enjoyed it! I really enjoyed the video but wasn’t sure if I would post it, since I normally just write articles. The fact that you watched it that many times makes me glad I went ahead and posted it.

We hate failure at the time but never know what it may lead to.

I hate to burst your bubble, but most of the people profiled in the video wouldn’t have a chance in today’s world. US Grant is generally considered one of our most incompetant presidents, why did you include him at all? Edison was a prolific user of coca-wine (cocaine-laced alcohol), and we don’t generally tolerate drug use from people in modern industrial labs.Michael Jordan was a great basketball player, but he’s incapable of doing anything else, even his marriage eventually collapsed. And the only way Lincoln (or anybody else in his day) got elected was because of the political machine of that period, breathtakingly corrupt by our standards.
Success is not a guaranteed. If it was just about effort nobody would ever loose the Superbowl. And it is much, MUCH harder to recover from failure today than in the past. Bank accounting was primative and archaic just 100 years ago. Credentials were harder to check, accountability was just wasn’t possible like we demand of people today. You can’t ’start over’ in America anymore, even a single failed business follows you around in your credit history, bankruptcy records, ect. I’m not saying people should never risk. But a failure today is pretty much going to hurt you for the rest of your life
